It’s been a while since I’ve updated my blog but there’s so much going on over here at The Rusted Pixel headquarters (Lol) that I’ve just been super busy. There’s lots of great things in development in terms of client projects and personal work but also recording workshops for stylized modeling and UV mapping! So I will have lots of news to share soon but for now I want to post some photos of canvas prints I’ve had made for my home office.
“All the Things” is a personal project I created in collaboration with Chris Guyot. I approached Chris with the idea of taking a bunch of unfiinished projects and just making the hero scene, the money shot! Rather than building up stories to each we decided to just take the best pieces and edit them together into one short piece. The common thread in each? The colour blocking which was taken to heart by the motion graphics community and many artists had their own go at using a very limited palette to colour entire scenes. It was such a simple idea but turned out to be a very popular and powerful way of telling stories and selling products!
Some continued work on my personal project. Here’s carriage number six for my upcoming personal project “Derailed”.
So, this week I decided to take a break from animation and motion graphics and jump back into a modelling heavy personal project. I’ve really taken a liking to having two different projects running simultaneously. It means when one starts to get you down and you need a new challenge or something different you can move over to the second project. It helps me to keep moving forward on personal work without consigning it to a hard drive, never to be touched again.
Here’s the newest carriage for the “Derailed” project where different types of dwellings and buildings are on train carts. Pretty simple concept. Below are the other carriages for the project too.

Here’s some stills from a short project I’ve been working on which is based around cute, stylized foods and cookware. “Breakfast time” is the first in a series that will run for a few months. I’ll be posting them often to Instagram stories if you want to keep updated on progress.
“All the Things” has won the Best International Short Film award at the 2019 Irish Animation Awards. Myself, Chris and John are all really pleased with the news and want to thank Animation Ireland very much for considering our piece the winner for this year!
Here’s a snippet of the short animation I’m working on called “It’s more than that”. It’s an early animation blockout. None of the secondary animation has been adjusted and some of the timing needs correcting.
It’s an early concept to show how each of the transitions will lead from one object to another to tell the story.

“'It’s more than that” is the third of three short projects but will actually be post first! Confusing? I know! Sorry, that’s how my brain works. So I’ve three shorts in development for 2019 - “It’s more than that”, “Derailed” and “Dinner is Served”.
Each time I felt I was working a project that would showcase my animation abilities, the project grew too large or became too ambitious. I decided to take a step back and work on something more straight forward. I’m known as a designer and modeller in the C4D community but I really want to showcase my animation skills so I’ve decided to publish three high quality animations.
The goal for “It’s more than that is to show clients that I am capable of creating complex transitions from one object to another. I wanted to do it in a fun and interesting way. The idea is a simple one, it’s how children see every day objects like a stick or a box and use their wild imagine to see it as something more. Something to have fun with. So the short will start with a stick and show it transform into different things. Things such as a sword, a baseball bat, an oar, a shovel. Anything fun and exciting.
The animation will be fast and snappy. Each object with change from one to the other rather quickly. I worried that some viewers might miss what one or two objects are. I was thinking, if a viewer isn’t paying close attention they might miss a step. Say it changing from a baseball bat to a telescope. So to try prevent that I decided to create secondary objects to help reinforce what the newly transformed object is. So when the stick transforms into a shovel, it digs frantically and a chest of gold pops out of the ground. Or when it changes into an oar it then starts to row a small boat around before transforming into the next object.
It’s a very dynamic little project to start with but I’m confident it will turn out well.
Derailed is a short personal project I’m working on. It’s going to be the largest of three short projects for (hopefully) 2019. It’s a story about different types of dwellings that move about on train carriages and mine carts. Think of Howls Moving Castle or Immortal Engines and you’ll have a pretty close idea.
Above shows four of the eight “dwellings on carriages”. They are the larger objects that will have satellite objects following them around. The thinking is to keep this pretty streamlined without building huge scenes full of background objects. Alone, they may seem a little lost. I felt there was a little room to expand without increasing the workload too much so I decided to add a satellite cart to each object to help convey what’s going on per carriage.
So, for instance, the windmill carriage has wheat carts that follow it around. While the trailer carriage has small gardens and picket fences with plastic pink flamingos inside. It allows me to push the story a little more and add another layer of interest and fun without getting too heavy with lots of work.
The boat was the very first model created for the entire piece and it set the style, tone and level of production values for any model that came afterward. It’s going to be one of my most ambitious projects to date and I can’t wait to share more!
